All our lovin’ at eleven! Our pregnancy and APAS story

Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) is an illness that involves the immune system, and causes increased clotting of the blood. Normally antibodies, chemicals made by the immune system, are helpful in fighting germs or viral infections from outside the body. However in APS, the immune system makes antibodies that cause blood to clot abnormally. This may cause problems with the pregnancy. http://www.apsfa.org/pregnancy.htm

We can do it! We will junk APAS!

Fast forward.

OUR APAS FIGHTERS!

1.    Dra. Angge Aguilar at Dra. Lara Alentajan-Aleta

2.    Mga Kaibigan at Pamilya

Mahirap magka-APAS.

Online support group rocks!

4. Dra.

Kinarir ko talaga ‘to. May paminsan-minsang ice cream treat pero dapat no sugar added.

My favorite : Saging na saba

Nanaystrip's photo of Tatay and Rio

Happy birthday RIO!!!

Big boy na si Rio!

    • Hi Jen! Thanks for sharing your APAS story. Just from reading your comment, I can sense that you are a very strong woman. We, APAS patients, are given that special gift of courage and hope from pregnancy and beyond. How old is your first child? Rio’s now 2 years and 3 months. APAS children are truly blessings to us parents!

We also had a very difficult time dealing with the financial aspect of APAS. Our key in overcoming this difficulty was the humility to ask for help plus we are also grateful to have friends and family who supported us all the way.

Yes, Jen, we can fight and win over APAS! Thanks for visiting my blog and sorry for this very late reply. Regards to your family.

But definitely, lower than 10K.

Ask your OB to give you an order for APAS test and inquire ka sa PGH. Balitaan mo ko ha.

      Let’s fight APAS!

Kaya natin ang APAS. We just have to get and seek help from our dearest family and friends.🙂

    • Hi malou! Salamat sa pag-share ng iyong story. I totally agree with your OB na magpaconsult ka sa immunologist. Lara Aleta, may clinic siya sa Don Santiago Bldg ( in front of PGH) at St. Luke’s E. Rod QC. You just have to talk to your immunologist and OB para mas makita ninyo ang inyong options. Thanks uli for writing and I hope to hear from you again. Take care!

  13. Hi Ma’am,good afternoon….thank you for sharing your story.Im Amazyl Salcedo 37 yrs.old…..of Cecu City.I’m also an APAS SURVIVOR.
BY GOD’s grace when I was diagnosed na positive ako marami akong worries….but as what Romans 8:31 states …”.if GOD be for us who can be against us?” No matter what illness/disease that comes our way.
As to my experience my firstborn baby weighs only 3lbs.& 15 oz…now he’s already 8 yrs.old….but that I haven’t diagnose yet…after 6 yrs. I got pregnant the second time but sad to say namatay yung baby ko 7mos.sa tiyan ko….it was so depressing but as the saying goes “There’s always a Rainbow after the rain”…
After 6 months God fulfilled His promise ….I got pregnant the third time….& this time I looked for an OB that is an FPOGS,FPSMFM & FPSUOG not just an ordinary OB…..& she was an answered prayer to us….she helped me & encouraged me to do all these tests etc….if I want that my baby to live……at first I have lots of hesitation….but my GOD is a BIG GOD than any problems this world may offer….
I have undergone the APAS TEST which proved that I’m APAS positive,I have my shots twice a day of heparin til nanganak & I am so blessed to have my supportive husband…..for his undying support & strength in injecting me everyday. It was October 5,2012, 6:10 a.m. ,the JOYOUS day of our life when “ZIAH JEIEL “came out of this world by normal delivery ,weighs 6lbs.33oz….strong & healthy……
So for all moms out there we can DO it by God’s GRACE……stay strong!remember God won’t give us problems that we can’t handle.WE CAN MAKE IT …WE HAVE AN AWESOME GOD! let’s finished this race & fight it…..go,go,go APAS SURVIVORS!

  16. Hi po. Just finished reading your APAS journey. Very inspiring!
I had 2 miscarriages (2009) and we had our APAS first born child. He was 32 weeks that time.

We were so happy when we found out that we were going to have a baby soon. I was pregnant! Finally after years of waiting, our prayers were answered. We went through the usual process of check-ups and ultrasounds but it wasn’t good news at all. Something was wrong. We had to talk to an immunologist. We found a Ms. LA (immunologist). Ms. LA recommended a battery of tests and we had it done at PGH. The test showed that I have a rare blood condition called APAS. We were saddened but encouraged by the Ms. LA’s disposition at that time. It felt like it wasn’t a big deal and it was just a matter of having enough funds for all of the drugs I had to take. We felt it was doable.

It was a very challenging pregnancy with weekly ultrasounds, daily Heparin injections to my belly, and weekly consultations with our new OB Ms. AT. Multiple hospitalizations for excessive bleeding and for hydration therapy as my amniotic fluid were at very dangerous levels. At that time, we were informed that there’s a chance our son (yes he’s a boy =D) would not survive, but still we were proud of our Heckie. He hanged on until the end. We were still trying to enjoy our pregnancy anyway we can and remained hopeful always. We prayed and prayed that he’ll be ok at then suddenly during one ultrasound session, we saw our Heckie doing great. My fluid levels were normal. Everything was good with the world.

Heckie was and is a fighter. He survived the “toxic” environment of my womb. We’re so proud of him.🙂 But alas it wasn’t to last. My fluid just took a dive down and I had to go to a hospital to have my womb hydrated. We were nearly there though so we thought, just a few more days and everything’s going to be ok. Ms. AT recommended a CS so we can take care of Heckie properly outside of my “toxic” womb. It was scheduled for June 20. But Heckie couldn’t wait any longer, his movements were becoming less frequent and my fluid was at low levels again.
Ms. AT did an emergency CS on June 10. Heckie was in my womb for 32 weeks. Just 1 more month and he would have been a full term baby. Hector Marvielle Troy was born June 10 9:19PM. He was named after Hector of Troy because he’s a fighter and our champ! Marvielle means miracle because, well he is our miracle. When I saw Ms. TA’s facial expression, I knew something was wrong. We were hoping it was just Hydrocep. I mean it’s a curable and manageable condition. But we were wrong. Oh so wrong.

Because of my constant low fluid levels, the ultrasounds didn’t really show a lot to the doctors. Turns out that the low fluid was due to our baby Heckie not developing any kidneys. And no kidney meant no lungs or in Heckie’s case, very weak lungs. So he had trouble breathing. Something we just take for granted. He has Potter Syndrome.

He got his Dad’s height, we think. He was so small but it looked like he was going to be a tall guy and Mommy’s eyes but he somehow looked “singkit” like his Dad. It was a bittersweet moment when we held Heckie and saw him for the first time. He basically just said hi to his mommy and daddy before he left for Heaven and to be with Papa God. He was with us for over 4 hours. It was the best 4 hours of my life.
It was hard to let go but still we don’t regret ever having you Heckie. We miss and love you soo much. We’ll see you again in due time.

    • Hello Dina! Stay healthy! Paumanhin sa huling reply.🙂

  24. Hello Ladies,

I just found out today that I have APAS. MC twice @ 6 wks & 10 wks. I was referred by my OB sa fertility specialist and started me on Aspirin & Corticosteroids low dose. Then once we get preggy again refer ulit ako sa immunologist. I’m really hoping & deeply praying for God’s guidance and miracles that this time sana po all of it will work. Khit maka-isang baby man lang kami sobrang thankful na. Thank you for your sharings does help a lot.

    Let us all pray together.
